
Overview of Esports in the Philippines
Esports played a major role in the growth of the gaming industry for the past couple of years and is continuing to do so. Henceforth, it has no doubt that it has reached the Philippines for quite some time. To be specific, the Philippine Esports Organization, or known as PeSO, was established back in 2011, which officially marked the beginning of esports in the country. And ever since then, it has continued to grow in every passing year.
The leading game currently in the Philippines is Mobile Legends, a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), that primarily uses smartphones as its platform. It has peaked a total of 2.65 million active players recorded back in April of 2019 and has a compound annual growth rate of 8.78% as of June 2021. Other games that are popular in the Philippines and where Filipinos have seen spotlights on an international scale are, VALORANT, DOTA 2, and Tekken 7. In addition, other games that are popular that are also currently generating local esports scenes alongside the mentioned game are League of Legends (PC and Wild Rift), PlayerUnkown’s Battleground (PUBG), and Call of Duty Mobile (CODM).
With the trend of esports rising in numbers in the Philippines, it has also opened numerous opportunities and professions for the people. Contrary to most belief, there are various working force going on behind the scenes in every esports event we witness.
